Why was the mission born?

In order for a life to arise in this world as taught in Buddhism, there must be five components present. Likewise, our Mission, a religious society was born because the five factors were present at its beginning.

Our Motto: "Mission Above Self"

The services rendered by the Mission's resident monks and management committees, under the guidance of our spiritual leaders, have traditionally been motivated by compassion and good will. The Mission focuses a great deal on education - study , understand and practice the Buddha's teachings. Going through the last 15 years, there were numerous volunteers who came to serve the Mission in the best of their capacities. Working for noble causes, most came to the understanding and realisation that "to service others is to service one self". To optimise strength and efforts in all of the Mission's endeavours, volunteers serve in unity with the motto: "Mission Above Self"

In Brief: SBM's History

Singapore Buddhist Mission was established in November 1981 as a non-profit-making society dedicated to the spread of the Buddha's teachings for the well-being and happiness of mankind. Step with us to see how all this happened:

The idea was conceived in the mind of the Venerable Dr. K Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Thera, our Chief Religious Advisor.
The purpose was to spread the teachings of the Buddha to the English-educated in Singapore. The collective kamma of the world-be members made this possible.
The noble aim of such a society took seed in the person of Mr. Tan Beng Lew who later became our first president and currently, patron.
Together with a few founding members. a meeting was held on 1st June 1981 at the residence of Mr. Sam Samarasinghe to discuss in earnest the formation of the Society.
A place was found and the Mission was born on 10 November 1981 at No. 9 Jalan Korma, Singapore
